How to calculate wallpaper rolls
- Measure your walls. Enter each wall’s width and height (or the room perimeter and ceiling height).
- Set the pattern. Pick the match type and enter the pattern repeat from the roll label.
- Choose your roll. Select a roll preset (European, US double, peel & stick) or enter custom dimensions.

- Buy one batch. Order every roll in one purchase with the same batch number, plus one spare.
A worked example
A project that recommends 10 rolls of traditional wallpaper needs two tubs at the planning rate of one tub per six single rolls. The same dimensions with prepasted or peel-and-stick paper need zero separate tubs; follow the manufacturer’s activation and preparation directions instead.

Frequently asked questions
How much wallpaper paste do I need?
As a rough planning figure, one tub of ready-mixed paste covers about six single rolls. Product coverage varies, so compare the returned tub count with the adhesive label and the wallpaper maker’s instructions.
Does paste-the-wall paper use less adhesive?
Application is faster and cleaner, but coverage still depends on the adhesive, wall porosity and paper weight. This calculator uses the same conservative six-roll-per-tub planning rate unless the manufacturer states otherwise.
Do prepasted wallpapers need paste?
Normally no separate paste is needed; the backing adhesive is activated according to the product directions. Some installers use special activators, but only do so when the manufacturer recommends it.
Does peel-and-stick wallpaper need paste?
No. Peel-and-stick panels have a pressure-sensitive backing, so the calculator returns no paste. Clean, smooth and prime the wall as directed because extra paste can damage the product.
Should I buy extra wallpaper adhesive?
Round up to whole tubs and follow the coverage printed on the exact product. Very porous walls, heavy wallpaper and generous application can increase use, while unopened excess may be returnable under the store policy.
Can I use any paste with any wallpaper?
No. Paper, vinyl, non-woven and specialty wallcoverings can require different adhesives. Use the calculator for quantity planning, then match the paste type to both the wallpaper and wall-surface instructions.
